The inspiration for this recipe is my dad's love for chicken burgers. I experimented to create the best burger recipe. This one does not disappoint in the flavor department. It's similar to my tomato chicken slider recipe but with a Mexican flavored twist.

To make this healthy chicken burger recipe, you will simply need to gather a few key ingredients that create a tasty Mexican flavored dish.

1. Ground Chicken - I used lean ground chicken breast for this chicken burger patties recipe, but you can swap with ground beef if you want to make a regular burger recipe, but with Mexican flavors.
2. Black Beans - Adds additional fiber for great gut health. If you only have pinto beans, that works well too.
3. Spices - I used sea salt, smoked paprika, onion powder, and cumin. You can swap smoked paprika for regular paprika.
4. Egg - You need a binder for this burger recipe, eggs are perfect. However, you can swap it with a flax egg if you don't have any eggs on hand.
5. Lime - I used the juice and zest to kick up that citrus flavor that balances the seasonings.
6. Cilantro - Fresh cilantro is best, but you can use coriander spice.
7. Extra Virgin Olive Oil - I typically use a lot of olive oil in my recipes, because the flavor is neutral in taste.
8. Garlic - This ingredient was used my chicken burgers. It is optional if you dislike garlic. I highly recommend though.
9. Optional Toppings - I like to top it with some avocado, jalapeno peppers, pineapple, mango, and red onions.

I like to cut make on red meat whenever I can, and one of the easiest ways to do that is by making ground chicken or turkey instead.

However, look for ground breast meat or packages that say 90% lean ground chicken or turkey, because typically packaged poultry is usually made from dark meat, and skin is added in.

Generally, the thighs and legs (dark meat) tend to be more flavorful, but higher in fat. This is why I try to look for ground breast meat instead. This chicken burger recipe is the perfect use of ground chicken breast.

One 4-ounce serving of chicken breast usually contains about 160 calories and is a great source of lean protein. It is not only a great source of protein but rich in vitamins and minerals. Iron, B vitamins, potassium, phosphorus, zinc, magnesium, and selenium.

If you typically eat red meat and opt instead for a lean chicken, you can help reduce your cholesterol levels by lowering the amount of saturated fat you are consuming. Chicken is also a great source of B vitamins, which help in energy production, as well as help form red blood cells in the body.

Ground chicken has a mild flavor profile, which means it will take on the flavor of whatever seasonings you choose to use for the recipe. You can go Italian with oregano, parsley, and basil, or Mexican by using cumin in a recipe.

🇲🇽 Since this is a Mexican chicken burger patty, I chose cumin and smoked paprika to bring that Mexican flavor profile forward.

🍗 Firstly, in a large bowl, combine the ground chicken, garlic, cumin, onion powder, paprika, cilantro, lime juice, egg, and salsa. Combine the mixture thoroughly.

🫘 Next, fold in 2 tablespoons of black beans. Form into 5 to 6 burger patties.

🫒 Then heat the 2 tablespoons of olive oil in a grill pan. Grill the chicken patties for 6-7 minutes on each side until cooked through.

🍔 Finally, serve the chicken burgers on hamburger buns. If you want to ditch the bun, you can serve on lettuce leaves or on top of sweet potato toast. Top with any of your toppings of choice.
